Most people who work within accessibility have a personal reason for doing so.<\/p>\n
This is the central reservation on the Old Shoreham Road, in West Sussex, UK.<\/p>\n
If you know the road, I am talking about by the cemetery.<\/p>\n
I was a passenger in a very bad car crash.<\/p>\n
It was the 11th June 1989 at 4am.<\/p>\n
The driver fell asleep at the wheel and hit a lamppost at 46 mph.<\/p>\n
The car was wrecked and we were left with horrendous life-changing injuries.<\/p>\n
From that moment on, we saw the world through the lens of disability.<\/p>\n
I have photos of the car which I am not going to show here because I do not want to cause upset.<\/p>\n
It wasn\u2019t great, in fact it was a close call whether we would survive.<\/p>\n
If the accident had not happened, I would probably not give accessibility any more thought than anyone else and that is why I do not get frustrated when I meet people who do not get it.<\/p>\n
It is my role to get alongside them and help them on this journey, one that we will all need to take.<\/p>\n
