{"id":5266,"date":"2023-02-16T21:42:12","date_gmt":"2023-02-16T21:42:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/accessbydesign.uk\/?p=5266"},"modified":"2023-02-16T21:48:38","modified_gmt":"2023-02-16T21:48:38","slug":"let-me-ask-you-a-question","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/accessbydesign.uk\/abd\/let-me-ask-you-a-question\/","title":{"rendered":"Let me ask you a question"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">If you truly wanted to find out how accessible your website is for disabled people, does it make sense to use disabled people to help you find out? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4}}\">If the answer is yes then you know the first question to ask when you\u2019re looking for somebody to work with you on improving your digital accessibility! <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4}}\">I\u2019ve been working with inclusive website layout for 15 years.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">My company created the website first fully accessible, mobile and tablet-friendly website, 12 years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Yet, without my team, I can never fully assess how accessible a website is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4}}\">This is because my own disabilities do not affect my ability to interact with websites in any way. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\">My team, however, have disabilities that do. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\">Visual: some of my team use screen readers <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Physical: one member of my team cannot use a mouse or keyboard and uses dictation software instead <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">Cognitive: one member of my team has extreme ADHD and dyspraxia and has great challenges with screen contrast, as well as the language actually used on websites. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\">They all share their screens with me. I record both their screens and their commentary. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\">This is as close as I can get to understanding what their lived experience is like. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\" data-tt=\"{&quot;paragraphStyle&quot;:{&quot;alignment&quot;:4,&quot;writingDirection&quot;:1}}\">When I share these videos with our clients, they, too, get an understanding of what they lived.
